About Soft Matter Canada

Soft materials exhibit a response to external stresses that is in between liquid-like and solid-like. They are easily deformable, and are therefore strongly affected external stresses and by thermal fluctuations.

Soft matter, as a discipline, is interesting for three reasons. First, it enables the construction of model systems for studies of fundamental phenomena - such as freezing, melting, the glass transition and alloy formation - on length scales and timescales that are amenable to real space and time (microscopy) as well as reciprocal space techniques (xray, neutron and light scattering). Second, it involves the study of many everyday materials around us: gels, foams, clay, rubber, paint, yogurt. Finally, it enables the design of novel materials with applications in information technology, life sciences, energy and food.
